Frequently asked questions
Why can the byte count be bigger than the character count?
Plain English letters take one byte each in UTF-8. Accented letters, Arabic and emoji take two or more. Size limits in databases and SMS often count bytes.
Is an emoji one character?
Usually yes. The counter counts user-perceived characters, so most emoji count as one, even when they are built from several code points.
